Hunting for Wonder  is an inspiration film exploring the human connection to nature and the fragility of the web of life.
It is a dreamlike journey where children and Estonia’s tiniest creatures — insects, plants, fungi, and lichens — take center stage, revealing all the wonders we usually miss during everyday walks in nature.

The macro world

The captivating charm of a fragile ecosystem on a journey of
discovery and growth with children.

Kendrik

Kendrik isn’t afraid of spiders — he likes them. If he could talk to them, he’d ask why they have eight legs while insects have only six.

Nora

Nora wants to know how insects see us. If she were an insect, she’d be a dragonfly — beautiful, fast-flying, with aquatic larvae that can swim.

Karmen

Karmen loves dense, wild forests, climbing on rocks and trees, and catching insects. She has a special insect-catching kit for her adventures.

Characters

Children with a special connection to nature exploring, reflecting, and uncovering the hidden life of the natural world.
The story is guided by children — curious explorers who seek to understand the world around them. They search for nothing less than wonder itself.

Author

KRISTA JUTT is a film producer, director, and screenwriter. She studied film at the Baltic Film and Media School, earning her master’s degree in 2012.

Her works include animation, fiction, audiovisual art, and documentaries, always centered on visual storytelling with a meaningful message.

Krista is a passionate nature observer. She has explored her favorite wild places for years, noticing how the environment around us changes and pondering humanity’s role in preserving this wondrous realm. As the author of Hunting for Wonder, her goal is to make a documentary that is captivating, educational, and just magical for children.

Director of photography

HEIKO SIKKA is a master of dreamlike imagery. His artistic vision brings the film its final, perfect touch.

With long-standing experience in both documentary and feature filmmaking, Heiko has been a member of the Estonian Society of Cinematographers since 2017. He studied cinematography under Jüri Sillart at the Baltic Film and Media School (2006–2011).

Macro cinematographer

HANNES ROHTMA has spent over a decade observing the lives of insects through his camera lens, sharing short films and reports about Estonia’s most fascinating species on Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) programme Osoon.

His nature films Where the Frogs Come From and The Story of the Demoiselle were filmed both above and below water — in challenging conditions, with great skill and passion. In Hunting for Wonder , Hannes captures the film’s mesmerizing macro shots, revealing rare moments made possible only through deep dedication.

Funding

Hunting for Wonder has received development support from the Estonian Cultural Endowment and the Estonian Film Institute.
Films made for Estonian children are rare, which means their bond with local culture remains fragile,
and a new generation of young audiences may not grow to value Estonian cinema.
Hunting for Wonder expands the viewer’s perception and empathy, inspiring imagination and awareness of the living world —
nurturing a generation that learns to care for and protect it.

The film Hunting for Wonder is being produced in collaboration with scientists and experts from the University of Tartu,
Estonian University of Life Sciences, University of Tartu Natural History Museum, Estonian Museum of Natural History, etc.
We will post additional information on the film’s blog and on the educational materials page.
